Desert Golf

What makes a golf course great? That question has inspired countless heated arguments by golfers and there are probably as many answers as there are golf courses in the Coachella Valley.

Is it innovative design and amenities that set one course apart from the others? Is it the landscaping and the feel of the course? Or is it the way a course sets up for players of different skill levels, letting each player feel challenged but not bludgeoned?

Or maybe, as with the Mission Hills Country Club Dinah Shore Tournament Course, it’s a little of everything.

The Shore Course topped the list of favorite golf courses named by 20 valley amateurs and pros polled for the Best of the Desert Golf Survey.

The course, which opened in 1966, earned 156 total points and six first-place votes, outdistancing one of the desert’s newer courses, The Quarry at La Quinta. Opened in 1994, The Quarry earned seven first-place votes and 120 points. The Shore Course was named on 18 top-10 ballots, while The Quarry was on 16.

Rounding out the top five are the La Quinta Resort and Club’s Mountain Course, venerable Bermuda Dunes Country Club and the famed TPC Stadium Course at PGA West.

La Quinta Country Club, another of the desert’s traditional courses from the 1950’s, leads off the second five, followed by The Plantation in Indio.  Three courses tied for eighth:  Rancho La Quinta Country Club, the Gary Player Course at Westin Mission Hills and the Jack Nicklaus Resort Course at PGA West.
